Understanding Music

There are some problems concerning to music. It is very hard to understand music perfectly – be sure to listen to someone who can do it for you. The composer can do it alone but he is usually far away from the audience. However in modern world people have many opportunities to listen to music and understand it anyway. The new high-fidelity record players and records and stereophonic components literally millions of families come to know the pleasure in listening to good music and dancing to it. Today the major classical composers reached such vast audience not only through recordings but on the concert stage as well. The youth can dance classical dances and enjoy the music of the past – for example, young people may listen to good music designed by such accomplished musicians as Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and other jazz musicians. But listening to music is one thing; understanding is quite another. The rich tonal qualities of a given piece evoke memories, create emotions, and give joy to the listener, but that in itself is not enough. The full meaning of music is hidden and the listener cannot know why the composer has written such music. He alone can tell the real situation. In my opinion, knowing something of the composer and his time helps understand the music in relation to its place in the past and in the present. Music is a special language the composer speaks to the audience. The elements which make up any piece of music are melody, thematic material, rhythm, harmony and the instruments used.
